jQuery Overview Slide Presentation

jQuery is a great JavaScript library for fast, easy development. I met the creator John Resig at a conference last year. He’s a great guy, and I even “won” a nice jQuery book.

jQuery is a fast, concise, JavaScript Library that simplifies how you traverse HTML documents, handle events, perform animations, and add Ajax interactions to your web pages

Here’s a good overview slide show on jQuery:

I’m Now on Twitter

Fun, Personal, Web Development No Comments »

So I’m finally on Twitter, the social network that informs users of what each other is doing. The web site and service is excellent; it’s very easy, fast, and it just works! There’s an excellent Twitter API for developers to have fun with. My Twitter account is dennisl.

“Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”

Firefox Problems: image caching and Gmail/Firebug

Web Development No Comments »

I love the Firefox browser, but I’ve had a couple issues with it lately. The first is image caching; Firefox was just not putting images in its cache; the graphics had to keep loading over and over! How obnoxious! After some tedious searching, I finally found the solution, which was a big relief:

  1. Type ‘about:config’ in the address bar
  2. Find ‘browser.cache.disk.enable’, right-click on it and choose ‘reset’.
  3. Find ‘browser.cache.memory.enable’, right-click on it and choose ‘reset’.

The second issue is the use of Gmail with Firefox and Firebug, the awesome web developer add-on. The latest version of Gmail doesn’t like the Firebug/Firefox combination. C’mon, Google, how did that happen?! The solution (unfortunately) is to disable Firebug with the Gmail URL; while in Gmail, right-click on the Firebug icon and select “Disable Firebug for mail.google.com”.

Anyone else had these problems?

Declining Image of Target

Personal, Sports, Web Development No Comments »

My family shops at Target, you know, the huge American retail store. I really like that store (especially when there’s a Taco Bell or Starbucks inside). But I think their corporate image, at least for me, is in a serious decline. This is mostly due to a couple of lawsuits going on against the company.

In the world wide web industry, we should all be familiar with the NFB vs. Target lawsuit—the biggest case regarding web accessibility in the United States, thus far. Target is actually fighting to keep its web site away from users with disabilities, and technology limitations. This is like a store closing its doors to anyone with a visual, hearing, or motor impairment. How naive and shameful!

In the second lawsuit, the American tennis great (retired) Andre Agassi is seeking an injunction against Target for using his name without permission. Apparently Target is putting Agassi’s name on sandals without permission when they’ve already been asked to stop. How silly.
